Baker House
Completed in 1890, the historical Baker House consists of a two-story main house with porches on both floors. As was custom in those days, the kitchen was built separate from the main house in case of fire the main house would not be lost. The two buildings were connected by a covered walkway. Much of the house is still original and the craftsmanship can be seen throughout from its beautiful wood floors, the original sash windows, the ornate door hinges, the hand carved stair railing, and the stained-glass window on the second-floor landing. The lower level of the house has three rooms – a parlor, living room and library. Upstairs has four bedrooms and a bath.
The house was built by Senator David H. Baker (1841-1917) who served in both the Kentucky and Florida State Senates. He also served in the Civil War as a First Lieutenant in the 12th Kentucky Cavalry (Union).
The Baker House has stood for over 130 years and has seen the world around it change. The house was donated to the City of Wildwood in September 2012. The City along with the members of The Villages DAR chapters maintain and support the house. Time is spent cleaning, decorating the house during the holidays, reporting problems and acting as docents. Funds are raised by events held at the house.

Flags for Fallen
Every May throughout the United States, the Flags for Fallen programs honor the memory of Veterans by placing American flags at their graves, creating a lasting tribute to their service and sacrifice. Placing flags for fallen veterans is more than a ceremonial act; it is a symbol of gratitude, remembrance, and respect. Each flag represents a life dedicated to service and the sacrifices makes by military personnel and their families.
Our DAR Chapter supports these initiatives at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL, helping to ensure that no hero is forgotten and their legacy continues to inspire future generations. Wreaths Across America
1992, the Worcester Wreath company of Harrington, Maine had a surplus of wreaths. Company founder Morrill Worcester recalled a boyhood visit to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia and donated 5,000 wreaths to honor the cemetery’s dead. With the help of volunteers and a local trucking company, these wreaths were delivered and placed on the veteran’s graves at Arlington. A snowy photo of these gravesite wreaths received widespread circulation on the internet and the Wreaths Across America movement was born. Today, millions of wreaths are placed at more than 1,300 cemeteries across our nation. The mission of Wreaths Across America is to Remember the fallen; Honor those who serve; and Teach the next generation the value of freedom.
The veteran’s wreath is a symbolic gift of appreciation from a thankful American, adorned only with a red velveteen bow. Our DAR Chapter supports this mission by volunteering to place wreaths on the graves of our fallen at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. There are two ways to show your support.
